Summer Knitting

Summer Knitting
Many of us think of knitting as a cold-weather activity. Certainly, many of the finished products are most useful in combating cold and wet conditions. When the temperatures begin to rise, some of us put the needles and yarn into storage, awaiting the fall.

But why?

When you think about it, summer is actually a great time to knit. As the song says, everyday living seems easier somehow, and the longer days mean more light with which to view small stitches. Sitting outside, perhaps under an umbrella, with a cold drink and a knitting project, is perhaps the closest one can come to complete relaxation. The season amply rewards those of us who persevere in our craft.

Choose your projects to suit your goals. Interested in near-instant gratification and wearability? Check out warm-weather fibers and lighter gauges. Search out patterns for tank tops, tunics, or vests – many of these can be worn over a tank top now and a turtleneck next December.

Contrary wisdom suggests trying a different tactic: perhaps it’s time to think ahead and plan for a wonderful addition to one’s winter wardrobe. I for one find the extended daylight of summer extremely helpful in finishing a larger project. Working in pieces keeps the weight of the fabric lighter while I knit; conversely, if I craft a top-down sweater, I can try it on as I go. Whichever you prefer, get started now and you’ll be able to finish in time for Thanksgiving.

And speaking of the holidays….this is a great time to get a head start on gifts! Have you ever wanted to knit something for everyone but couldn’t because of the time factor? Start now! Perhaps this will be the year that everyone in the family gets knitted and felted slippers! Or how about plushies for all of the littles? Make a list of intended recipients, set up a plan, and go for it!

Another great idea for summer knitting: consider working on an afghan, pillow cover, or other kind of home décor. Because you will probably be knitting flat pieces without a great deal of shaping, you’ll be able to focus on technique. Whether you want to be challenged or soothed, you’ll be able to knit without having to worry about fit!

However you decide to knit this summer, know that many of us are out here knitting with you in spirit. Keep those needles clicking, and enjoy long days of crafting!
