Valentine's Day Sewing Projects
Heart motifs are everywhere when it comes to Valentine's Day, the fourteenth of February. Hearts adorn Valentine cards, seen tucked onto red ribbon and tied on red roses, encased in chocolates nestled into elaborate heart-shaped boxes, fashioned into sweet conversation hearts, and usually in cupids' sight as they aim their magical arrows. The simple heart shape is easy to cut out of fabric scraps, stuff with fiberfill or scents to hand or machine stitch.
Craft a heart garland from your chosen fabric: cut 20 five or six-inch size hearts using pinking or straight sheers. Cut a slit about 1-inch wide in the middle of 10 of the hearts. To assemble, place one heart shape with and one without the cut right sides together then stitch close to all the outside edges, clip curves, turn right side out through the slit and press. Insert some poly stuffing though the opening to add dimension then hand-stitch the opening closed. Hand sew each heart about 3-inches apart onto a long length of red, black or gold ribbon. The heart garland can gracefully adorn a mantel or window.
You can even use the same sewn hearts to make a grapevine or straw heart wreath. Attach hearts all around a straw wreath form or cluster to one side of the wreath. If using a stiff foam wreath form, wrap with satin all around first then add the hearts. Add ribbon trim and tiny fabric roses for an endearing wall hanging.
Heart sachets are easy to make. Add an overlay of lace to each heart side before sewing, place right sides together and stitch leaving an opening for turning right sides out. Fill with potpourri and small amounts of fiberfill for softness. Trim with bits of ribbon and tiny fabric roses. Heart sachets can be made for lingerie drawers or as ornamentation to adorn wrapped presents.
A heart themed t-shirt or sweatshirt can be made by fusing several overlapping fabric hearts of different sizes and patterns to shirt fronts. Satin stitch or blanket stitch around edges to hold them firmly in place. Make a coordinating hair scrunchie from one or more of the same fabrics for a gift that young girls will love.
Sew a heart-shaped pincushion from fabric scraps of red cotton, wool, felt or velvet. Stuff the pincushion firmly with fiberfill. Make a smaller heart shape to attach with ribbon and filled with emery to keep sewing needles sharp. Emery is a crushed metal grit - think of the traditional tomato-shape pin cushion, some with an attached strawberry form, that has its dangling companion filled with emery. Trim the larger heart with lace, ribbon and tiny satin roses. Add a few straight pins for a great gift for a sewing enthusiast.
